GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of optimizing content so AI tools like ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews understand, trust, and cite it in their answers.

Think of it as a shift in what search rewards:

  • SEO gets your page to rank high, so a person clicks through.
  • GEO gets your content referenced inside an AI-written answer, whether anyone visits your site or not.

Example: someone asks ChatGPT for a good Google Ads budget as a small ecommerce brand. If your glossary page explains it clearly, the model may pull from it and name your brand, even though no one searched Google or clicked a link.

Because these tools pull from many sources at once instead of sending traffic to one page, GEO rewards clear, useful writing over keyword repetition.
