A zero-click search is a search where the user finds their answer directly on the results page and never clicks through to a website.
Example: someone searches what time zone Stockholm is in. Google shows the answer instantly, so there’s no reason to click, and no website gets that visit, not even the one Google pulled the answer from.
Why it matters:
- Ranking first organically no longer guarantees a visit if the query gets fully answered on the results page.
- More weight has shifted to paid placements, which still earn a click, and to being the cited source inside an AI answer, which builds visibility even without one.
This is a main driver behind GEO and AEO. If fewer people click through at all, being mentioned inside the answer becomes the new form of visibility.
