First-party data is information a business collects directly from its own customers, like email addresses or purchase history.
Examples:
- A customer’s past orders in your store.
- Which product pages someone viewed before leaving their cart.
- Engagement data from your own email list.
This differs from third-party data (bought from outside brokers, often from cross-site tracking) and zero-party data (information a customer volunteers directly, like quiz answers).
As browsers block third-party cookies and privacy rules tighten, businesses with a direct customer relationship, and their own data, can keep targeting effectively. Businesses that relied entirely on third-party tracking are losing that ability fast.
